Temples of India

Description

The Temples of India project is an initiative to develop and design a comprehensive repository of the historical temples of India from the beginning up till the 18th century CE. Due to a lack of research-based information and architectural documentation amidst growing urbanization, the built heritage is prone to further dilapidation and loss. Recognizing the existing gaps in documentation, the Project endeavours to develop multimedia modules offering insights into the architectural marvels that form an integral part of India's cultural and historical heritage. Initiated in the state of Rajasthan with temples under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the project covers themes such as evolution, historiography, architectural styles and symbolism through in-depth research and documentation.

Collective participation of researchers, architects, scholars, domain experts, cultural professionals, community members and institutions are coming together to make this vision a reality.

The module on each of the temples consists of a combination of elements such as overview essays, allied articles, image galleries, photo essays, architectural drawings and library artefacts.

Mumbai Archive Project

Description

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is home to diverse communities and natural ecosystems, and has a continuously evolving cultural environment. In recent times, rapid urbanization has influenced and threatened the cultural identities of communities in the region. The process of documentation and archiving plays a vital role in preserving information on our cultural heritage. With this intention, the project begins with a focus on the Kolis and the East Indians; two among the several indigenous and migrant communities—the Agris, Bhandaris, Warlis, Katkaris, Khojas, Pathare Prabhus, Bene Israelis and others—who have inhabited the islands for many centuries.

MMR consists of nine Municipal corporations; covering the districts of Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban and parts of Thane, Raigad and Palghar. The documentation falls within the domains of Built environment, Personal Histories, Language and Literature, People and Cultures, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Natural Environment.

The project works with field researchers and photographers to create modules that consist of essays, photoessays, image galleries and video interviews.
